IRVINE, Calif. (June 14, 2010) – The California Avocado Commission (CAC) embraced social media marketing to announce the winners of the California Avocado Best Guacamole Contest. David Vaughn of La Mesa, Calif. won the “best tasting classic guacamole” category with his “Best Guacamole Ever” recipe, and Trisha Kruse of Eagle, Idaho garnered the “most creative/original” category grand prize with her “Pineapple Chipotle Mango” guacamole.

Final contest judging was held at a scenic avocado grove in Valley Center, Calif. on June 2. California Avocado growers Mike Sanders and Chris Ambuul hosted the event at their grove and served as judges along with popular food bloggers Diane Cu and Todd Porter of White on Rice Couple, Jan DeLyser, vice president of marketing for CAC and Angela Fraser, CAC marketing manager.

“CAC is running on full throttle to promote California Avocados in season, combining traditional consumer promotion such as recipe contests with powerful social media overlays,” said Jan DeLyser. “We vastly expanded the reach of the California Avocado Best Guacamole Contest by sending live tweets to California Avocado Twitter® followers, revealed contest updates and winning recipes on our Facebook® page and filmed the judging to share on YouTube®.”
Hundreds of consumers from across the nation submitted guacamole recipes for the contest, which was open for entries on www.CaliforniaAvocado.com from April 15 through May 5. All entrants received an avocado scooper and a California Avocado recipe, which were designed to encourage these avocado fans to buy even more avocados. Grand prize winners Vaughn and Kruse each will receive a six-month supply of California Avocados, and the two first prize winners will receive a California Avocado gift pack.
“CAC continually promotes new usage ideas for avocados, and we can’t overlook that the most common use for avocados nationwide is guacamole,” said DeLyser. “CAC’s guacamole recipes usually use at least 4 large avocados, encouraging shoppers to purchase more avocados in each shopping trip.”
